After 15 Years, Many Hydrogen Vehicles Are Completely Lost

Despite billions in investment, hydrogen cars face a major crisis: short-lived storage tanks make aging models economically unviable. While BMW plans a 2028 fuel-cell X5, most competitors have scaled back due to low demand and a sparse refueling network, leaving the technology’s future in passenger cars increasingly uncertain.
Hydrogen car adoption remains minimal; only one Toyota Mirai was sold in the Netherlands in 2025, and Germany’s fleet is largely institutional. Furthermore, UN/ECE 134 standards mandate tank replacement after 15–20 years due to degradation from high pressure and temperature shifts, posing significant safety and cost concerns for aging vehicles.
The expiration of operating permits presents significant financial implications for owners of aging hydrogen-powered vehicles. Given that the replacement of storage tanks is a technically complex process involving costs that often exceed the residual value of the vehicle, many owners face the risk of an economic total loss.
Currently, no regulatory framework exists for mandatory inspections that could certify the extension of these tanks’ lifespans. Furthermore, due to the limited global adoption of hydrogen passenger cars, the development of standardized, certified testing methods appears unlikely in the near term.
While fuel cell technology continues to offer distinct advantages—such as zero-emission operation and rapid refueling capabilities—its long-term viability in the passenger vehicle market remains challenged. High production costs, a sparse refueling infrastructure, and the accelerated maturation of battery-electric vehicle technology collectively continue to diminish the prospects of hydrogen integration for personal transport.
Despite BMW’s commitment, hydrogen cars face an uncertain future due to high costs, infrastructure gaps, and storage tank life limits. While passenger adoption remains unlikely, hydrogen remains a promising solution for heavy transport and industrial use.
