AMG Boss Says AMG Will Be More AMG Than Ever Before

AMG CEO Michael Schiebe is certain: “AMG is becoming more AMG than ever before.” That is why the four-cylinder engines are being phased out, the brand is returning to six- and eight-cylinder engines, and there is a greater emphasis on sound and emotion.
AMG, the sports division of Mercedes-Benz, is a prime example of how a car manufacturer can regret its own actions. A few years ago, AMG played the downsizing card rigorously and decided that a four-cylinder with a bunch of electric motors could perfectly well replace a V8. AMG buyers, however, thought otherwise, and so the four-cylinder 63 E-Performance models are already ending up in the trash. The 43 versions of the SL and AMG GT will likely lose the four-cylinder as well.
In the C-Class and GLC, their place is temporarily taken by a significantly less powerful inline six, but AMG has not forgotten the V8. AMG Director Schiebe tells our colleagues at AutoExpress that larger models will receive a new V8, likely a high-performance version of the new flat-plane V8, such as the one already launched in the new 580 versions of the facelifted GLE and GLS.
Speaking to AutoExpress, Schiebe seizes every opportunity to emphasize that AMG has rediscovered itself. The Mercedes division is becoming more AMG than ever before. Not only through brute force—after all, that was achieved with those plug-in hybrids as well—but also through “emotion and design”.
However, all this does not mean that, according to Chiebe, there is absolutely no room left for electrification at AMG. A new duo of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid AMG 53s has just been launched in the GLE and GLS, a line that AMG also intends to maintain. Schiebe considers these models “a good compromise for people in areas where there are major restrictions regarding CO₂ emissions”.
Moreover, AMG is going even further with the full-fledged EV. As we all know, the new AMG GT 4-door will be fully electric. However, Schiebe promises a high level of emotion for this model as well, although the exact details of this – and especially the extent to which it succeeds in giving it an EV character – remain to be seen. The AMG GT will be a ‘bespoke’ AMG model and is therefore not a derivative of an existing car.
Schiebe himself will also soon be standing among the AMG four-cylinders at the curb, by the way, as his departure has already been announced. Stefan Weckbach will succeed him as of July 1, but AMG’s long-term plans naturally do not depend solely on who is at the helm.
