Autonomous Taxis Are Frequently Fined For Illegal Parking
In San Francisco, Waymo is transporting passengers in its driverless autonomous taxis. There are 300 of them on the road, and with that fleet comes traffic violations. No one is immune to mischief, not even artificial intelligence. Someone had to program it, right?
The Washington Post highlights a striking reality for self-driving taxis: last year, they amassed an astounding 589 tickets, amounting to a hefty total of $65,065 due to parking violations. These infractions varied widely, with instances of autonomous vehicles blocking the flow of traffic, impeding crucial access for street cleaning operations, and finding themselves in prohibited parking zones.
A Waymo spokesperson revealed that the company is diligently addressing the recent issue. Although the number of tickets issued may seem trivial—especially considering San Francisco doled out a staggering 1.2 million parking tickets last year—it’s intriguing to note that even cutting-edge autonomous vehicles are not immune to making errors! This situation highlights the complexities and challenges that come with the integration of self-driving technology into our bustling urban landscapes.
