The high-performance Lamborghini Urus Performante remains the fastest production SUV at Pikes Peak after BMW’s 738 horsepower XM Label Red attempt to take down the record ended with a crash.

Fortunately, the driver Matt Mullins escaped unscathed, but the same cannot be said for BMW XM Label Red, which arrived last year as the brand’s most powerful M model.

BMW of North America is mute on the reasons for the crash but the brand did issue the following statement :

“Unfortunately, our hopes for a record run with the BMW XM today ended with a race incident. Driver Matt Mullins is disappointed but unhurt. The focus now is on repairing the vehicle and planning for another record attempt later this summer.”

The BMW XM Label is a more powerful version of the high-performance BMW XM SUV. It is powered by a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, which makes 738-hp and 738 pound-feet of torque.

BMW claims that the ultimate M will reach 60 mph from standstill in 3.7 seconds and reach an electronically limited speed of 155 mph or 175 mph if owners opt for the optional M Driver’s Package.

For now, the 666-horsepower Lamborghini Urus Performante is still the fastest production SUV at the Pikes Peak after completing the 12.42-mile course in 10:32.064 time in 2022, beating the previous hill climb record of 10:49.902 set by the Bentley Bentayga in 2018.
