The India government has begun the process of making six airbags mandatory for all cars being sold in India from October 1 this year.

The new rule is applicable for cars that can seat up to eight people

The rule will apply to all vehicles manufactured after October 1, 2022.

A total of four airbags will be installed, including a curtain and two front-side airbags.

The Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways (MoRTH) has mandated six airbags for M1 vehicles. This category consists primarily of vehicles that can seat up to eight passengers. The order will apply to all vehicles manufactured after October 1, 2022.

According to the draft notification, M1 category cars must have two side/side torso airbags, one for each person in the front row, and two curtain airbags. The draft has already been approved by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Manufacturers will need to make safety changes, which will raise prices by around Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. This comes after the co-driver passenger airbag became mandatory on April 1, 2021.

As of now, two airbags are mandatory in all vehicles – one for the driver and the other for the co-passenger in the front seat. The rule for airbags for the driver’s seat was made mandatory from July 1, 2019, while the one for the co-passenger came into effect from January 1 this year.

To be sure, many Indian cars already have six airbags in their top variants.
