Ford CEO Jim Farley in a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, compared China’s auto industry today (the largest in the world) to that of Japan in the 1980s – but ‘on steroids’, noting that China’s existing factories can serve the entire North American market, put Ford and Co out of businesses.
“They have enough [production] capacity in China with existing factories to serve the entire North American market, put us all out of business. Japan never had that, so this is a completely different level of risk for our industry.”
During the interview, Farley also admitted that Americans would willingly to buy the Chinese cars being made today, calling the Xiaomi SU7 (Speed Ultra 7) he owns and drives “high quality” with a “great digital experience.”

But this isn’t the first time the Ford CEO will be speaking about his love for Chinese EVs. Farley first admitted year ago that he has been driving the Xiaomi SU7 for the past six months and is reluctant to part with the Chinese tech giant’s first-ever electric SUV.
“I don’t like talking about the competition so much, but I drive the Xiaomi,” Farley said in a conversation with Robert Llewellyn on The Fully Charged Podcast aired on Monday.
“We flew one from Shanghai to Chicago, and I’ve been driving it for six months now, and I don’t want to give it up.”
