Deliveries Of Mitsubishi Vehicles To US Dealers Are Suspended
Mitsubishi Motors has halted vehicle deliveries to US dealers in response to ongoing trade tensions and new tariffs from the Trump administration, highlighting how quickly changing policies can disrupt automakers’ logistics.
Since Mitsubishi’s entire U.S. lineup is made up of imported vehicles, every model is now subject to an additional 25 percent tariff. While the company will continue to export to North America, it has temporarily paused deliveries to its 330 U.S. dealers in an attempt to avoid the additional costs, at least for now.
Mitsubishi North America’s senior director, Jeremy Barnes, said that vehicles will remain at U.S. ports until the government announces its tariff decisions. He assured Nikkei Asia that the company has enough inventory to meet demand despite the shipment freeze.
Cox Automotive data shows Mitsubishi had a 79-day inventory of vehicles in the U.S. at the start of April, above the industry average of 70 days. For now, the brand is banking on a potential tariff change before dealer inventories run out. No price changes for U.S. customers have been announced.
Mitsubishi is not alone; Aston Martin, Audi, Lotus, and Jaguar Land Rover have also temporarily suspended vehicle imports to the U.S. Meanwhile, Nissan has stopped orders for the Mexican-built Infiniti QX50 and QX55, and Volvo is reportedly discontinuing the S90 sedan.
Despite trade uncertainty, Mitsubishi reported solid sales in the first quarter of 2025. The Japanese automaker sold 31,637 vehicles in North America in the first three months of 2025, an increase of 11 percent compared to the same period last year.
The Outlander remains the best-selling model in North America, with 11,992 units sold in Q1 2025, despite a 13% decline from Q1 2024. A refreshed version launched in late February, and the plug-in hybrid variant saw record sales in March.
The Mirage was Mitsubishi’s second best-selling model, with 7,301 units, followed by the aging Outlander Sport (6,910 units) and the Eclipse Cross (3,731 units).
