Ford Mustang Is Still Americans Best Selling Sports Car

Published

on

The Ford Mustang remains the best-selling sports car in America by a wide margin. Sales of the car grew by 3.0% last year.

The same can’t be said for the Chevrolet Corvette, whose sales have fallen 26.4% over the past 12 months. Dodge, which discontinued the Challenger in December 2023 and replaced it with coupe and sedan versions of the new Charger, saw sales rebound from a fraction of 2024.

The Nissan Z outsold the Toyota Supra by almost two-fold, even though Supra sales were up 12.9%. Nissan Z sales also rose, jumping 73.4% to 5,487 units. The Mazda MX-5 Miata ended 2025 with a 7.7% increase.

Volkswagen’s popular hot hatch isn’t as affordable as it once was, and its sales reflect that. Sales of the Golf GTI and Golf R fell 24.4% and 20.9% last year, respectively. Tariffs have pushed the Golf R’s price past $50,000, while the Golf GTI now costs nearly $36,000, about $6,000 more than in 2020.

Sales of the Subaru WRX also fell last year, down 41.1%. The automaker explained in July that it was prioritizing production of the Forester and Forester Hybrid over the sedan at its manufacturing facility in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, and that doesn’t appear to have changed.

Last year, Subaru also increased the starting price of the 2025 BRZ by nearly $1,000. BRZ sales fell 13.8 percent last year to just 2,881, about a third of the sales of the Toyota GR86.

While Toyota saw a jump in Supra sales in 2025, the mechanically similar BMW Z4 remained basically flat, with sales falling by less than 1.0 percent.
