General Motors Tells Suppliers To “Stop China”

Published

on

General Motors is making a striking appeal to its suppliers. The American automaker wants them to stop sourcing parts from China, even issuing an ultimatum.

According to Reuters, General Motors is completely fed up with “geopolitical disruptions” to its operations. Import tariffs, as well as export bans like those on Nexperia chips, simply make Chinese components too risky, according to GM. Therefore, Opel’s former parent company has reportedly called on its suppliers to stop sourcing from China altogether, wherever possible.

That “where possible” shouldn’t be seen as an easy way out, though, because GM seems determined. According to insiders cited by Reuters, suppliers must do everything in their power to find a non-Chinese alternative. For some suppliers, a deadline has even been set: by 2027, all supplied parts must be “China-free.”
