Honda And Nissan Confirm Merger Talks That Could Form World’s 3rd Largest Automaker By 2026 - autojosh

Remarkably, after a series of rumors and talks about a takeover that never materialized, Nissan and Honda reportedly reconnected for potential collaboration. Not globally, and not even in Europe, but still.

For a long time, it seemed that Nissan and Honda would merge, but only in the way the undersigned merged this morning with his breakfast. Nissan would be the breakfast, because in practice, the struggling car manufacturer would likely have simply been acquired by Honda. It didn’t happen at the last minute, and since then, Honda and Nissan have only been mentioned together in connection with the EV collaboration announced in 2024.

That changes today, as the two Japanese car manufacturers are reportedly seeking cooperation again. That’s what happens when top executives have each other’s numbers after a series of talks.

The goal of the new talks is explicitly not a merger this time, but instead it’s about exploring a more limited and “fluid” partnership, specifically for the North American market. Both brands have a significant presence, particularly in the US, and could achieve significant cost savings by merging certain activities. For example, the two brands could start joint production, which would extend the collaboration in North America beyond the previously announced collaboration on electrification.
