Chery’s Omoda And Jaecoo Auto Brands Upstage Global Rivals, Sell One Million In Three Years - autojosh

Chinese car brands have managed to sell more cars in Europe in the first seven months of 2026 than in all of 2025. A large part of the growth comes from PHEVs and Chery.

In total, Chinese brands sold 813,096 cars in Europe combined, Automotive News reports based on Dataforce figures. In the whole of 2025, that figure was 812,452, so that year has officially already been surpassed. In terms of market share, we are now talking about 9.7 percent, compared to 5.1 percent for the same period (i.e., 7 months) last year.

MG is the largest among Chinese brands in Europe and had already delivered 208,009 cars by 2026, although van manufacturer Maxus is included in that figure. BYD, however, grew much faster at 146 percent and is hot on MG’s heels with 205,451 cars, while the Chery Group is breathing down BYD’s neck with 201,544 units and a growth rate of no less than 283 percent. The latter seems unrealistic, but suddenly it isn’t so crazy when you consider that Chery has only just launched in Europe with Jaecoo and Omoda. It underscores that this is a force to be reckoned with, as such rapid growth is unusual even for a Chinese brand.

These figures also show that growth is no longer coming from EVs but from plug-in hybrids. This powertrain type, which is currently exempt from penalty tax, accounted for a 201 percent increase in registrations in the Chinese market, meaning PHEVs now account for 33.6 percent of Chinese cars sold in Europe. In July 2025, that figure was still 23 percent, reports Automotive News.
