General Motors (GM) has announced the start of supervised public highway testing of its next-gen eyes-off autonomous driving system in California and Michigan, ahead of deployment on its flagship Cadillac Escalade IQ electric SUV in 2028.

The carmaker said this will followed by more than 200 manual and supervised development vehicles, each operated with a trained test driver at the wheel who is capable of taking manual control at any time.

Following its debut in the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, the eyes-off driving, a self‑driving system – which is not dependent on continuous driver vigilance for safety – will be introduced to the brand’s other gas and electric vehicles.

“Eyes-off capability will be available from premium Cadillacs to mainstream Chevys, and everything in between, without rebuilding the system from scratch for each vehicle,” GM said in a statement.

Unlike vision-only self-driving systems, GM said Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), radar and cameras will be integrated into the vehicle’s design – starting with 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ – to provide a “safe, reliable, and highly capable eyes-off autonomous system.”

Behind the brand’s eyes-off system is the GM’s Super Cruise, which has expanded to 23 vehicle models since its debut in 2017, accumulating more than 800 million customer-driven miles and more than 5 million fully autonomous miles without a human driver.
