Marcello Gandini, The Legendary Designer Of Lamborghini Countach And Bugatti EB110, Dies Aged 85
Marcello Gandini, the legendary Italian automotive designer, known for his work with design house, Bertone, dead at 85.
Gandini is known for penning several iconic Lamborghini models, including the Miura, the Diablo as well as the Countach.
He is also credited with Fiat X/19, Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, VW Polo MK1, Maserati Quattroporte as well as Bugatti EB110.
In a 2009 interview, he said “his design interests are focused on vehicle architecture, construction, assembly, and mechanisms – not appearance”.
Marcello Gandini, the legendary Italian automotive designer known for styling the iconic Lamborghini Miura and the original Countach, has passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85.
Gandini spent much of his career working at Italian automotive design house, Gruppo Bertone, where he took over as head of design from Giorgetto Giugiaro at just 25 years of age.
“With deep respect, we remember his unforgettable contribution to the world of automotive design,” Bertone wrote on Instagram.
“His creations, true works of art on four wheels, have left an indelible mark in history and will continue to inspire and fascinate. His unique vision and incomparable talent will forever remain milestones in the industry.”
Gandini is known for penning several iconic Lamborghini models, beginning with the groundbreaking rear mid-engined Miura in the mid 1960s, followed by the scissor doored Diablo and the Countach in the 1970s and 2000s respectively.
He is also credited with iconic shapes such as 1970 Lancia Stratos Zero concept, Fiat X/19, Alfa Romeo 33 Carabo concept, Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, Volkswagen Polo MK1, Maserati Quattroporte as well as the Bugatti EB110.
In a 2009 interview with Robert Cumberford, editor at Automobile Magazine, Gandini indicated “his design interests are focused on vehicle architecture, construction, assembly, and mechanisms – not appearance”.
