Meet Mercedes VRC, A 4-in-1 Car That Turns Into Sedan, Wagon, Pickup Or Convertible In 15 Mins
Meet Mercedes-Benz VRC, a Concept that can turn into a sedan, wagon, pickup or a convertible in 15 minutes.
The four-in-one concept study designed to show off control, design, and comfort innovations in passenger cars.
VRC never made it to production, but some features from the concept made it to production Mercedes-Benz cars.
Back in 1995, the then Daimler-Benz (now Mercedes-Benz Group AG) unveiled the Mercedes-Benz Vario Research Car – a concept study designed to show off control, design, and comfort innovations in passenger cars.
The Mercedes-Benz Vario Research Car (VRC) Concept was prompted by research into the future. It combines four different interchangeable bodies on a single car, a conversion that is achieved within a matter of minutes.
If the Mercedes-Benz Vario Research Car (VRC) concept had made it to production, owners would have been able to remodel their cars as they wish into a sedan, Wagon, Pickup or a Convertible in just 15 minutes.

Then, Mercedes advertised the car as :
“…people will have more leisure time at their disposal and spend this leisure time by engaging in very different activities. And they will want to select their cars with leisure time activities and everyday use in mind.
“Keeping one’s own small fleet would, however, be uneconomical. This is where the Vario Research Car from Mercedes-Benz comes into the picture.”
Though, the idea of owning four different types of Mercedes vehicles in one never materialized, some features from the concept made it to production Mercedes-Benz cars.
These includes the Active Body Control (ABC), which made it to the Mercedes-Benz C215 while the Colour display mades its series launch in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220).
