Nissan Stops Production Of The Ariya EV For The US Market
Nissan will unequivocally halt production of its electric crossover, the Ariya, for the American market beginning with the 2026 model year.
The decision comes as the company prepares to launch a new generation of the popular Leaf model in the United States. The information was confirmed in a letter sent to traders, and it remains unclear whether Ariya, which is produced in Japan and subject to import duties, will return to the offer for 2027.
Nissan confirmed this news and explained its strategy in an official statement.
“Nissan is pausing production of the 2026 model year Ariya for the U.S. market and is reallocating resources to support the launch of the all-new 2026 Leaf, which will have the lowest starting suggested retail price of any new electric vehicle currently on sale in the U.S.,” a company spokesperson said.
The decision is not surprising to auto industry insiders, as Nissan has been making significant cost-cutting measures to ensure financial stability. This includes downsizing its design team and simplifying components like headrests. These changes are believed to be influenced by the new CEO, Ivan Espinosa, who started in April.
Despite positive reviews, Ariya failed to establish itself in the market. However, the slowdown in demand for electric vehicles and the elimination of government incentives around the world have made this model financially unviable.
Now all eyes are on the new Leaf for 2026. Nissan hopes to attract customers with attractive prices and thus improve its position in the electric vehicle segment. However, Automotive News reports that for the first few months, production will be limited by region while waiting for the battery supplier to increase its capacity.
