Porsche Won’t Produce Its Cars In The United States
Porsche is temporarily abandoning car production in the United States. Despite increased export costs due to US import tariffs, the German sports car manufacturer is very satisfied with the current origins of its vehicles, said North American director Timo Resch in an interview with the German business newspaper Handelsblatt. “Therefore, we have no immediate or concrete plans to switch to local production.”
The US is Porsche‘s largest market, with strong sales of higher-end models such as the 911. However, Porsche does not have production facilities in the US and is entirely dependent on imports from Europe.
Currently, an outdated US tariff of 27.5 percent still applies to cars. However, this should be reduced retroactively to 15 percent starting August 1st. Industry experts expect German car manufacturers to relocate their production to the US in the medium term.
Bloomberg News agency reported in June, citing insiders, that Porsche, part of the Volkswagen Group, was considering moving parts of its car assembly process to the US.
Handelsblatt also asked Resch about production in an existing factory of a VW subsidiary or only the final assembly of ready-made parts in the US. “From Porsche’s perspective, there are no concrete plans and no immediate need for either option,” Resch said. This is also because production volumes at Porsche are considerably lower than at Audi, for example. “That’s another reason why local production doesn’t currently make sense from a cost perspective.”
Porsche lowered its forecast for the third time this year in July due to the tariffs. In the first half of the year, global sales fell by 6 percent.
