Stellantis Set To Shut Down Its Commercial Vehicle Factory In UK
Stellantis plans to shut down its commercial vehicle manufacturing facility in Luton, England, creating uncertainty for the plant’s 1,100 workers.
The end seems near for the former Bedford and Vauxhall factory in Luton in Bedfordshire, England. Stellantis announces that it wants to close the factory. The factory employs around 1,100 people, for whom Stellantis promises to continue to do its best. Stellantis produces commercial vehicles in Luton.
The factory is to close as part of consolidation. Stellantis says it wants to transfer production from its Luton factory to its Ellesmere Port factory. Stellantis also builds commercial vehicles there. However, not all production will be relocated. In Luton, Stellantis currently produces the Citroën Jumpy, Peugeot Expert, Toyota ProAce, Fiat Scudo, and their passenger car versions (SpaceTourer, Traveller, ProAce Verso, and Ulysse). The Ellesmere Port factory is a production site where Stellantis builds several electric commercial vehicles. These are currently the ë-Berlingo, Combo Electric, E-Partner, and E-Doblo. Ellesmere Port will remain what Stellantis calls an ‘EV Hub’. It therefore seems unlikely that production of the diesel versions of Stellantis’ mid-size vans will be relocated to Ellesmere Port.
