Theft Of Radar Sensors Of VW Cars Is Becoming Rampant In The UK

Published

on

Thieves who steal radar sensors from cars have previously targeted Hondas, Hyundais, Mazdas and Mercedes, but now several Volkswagen models should be added to that list.

Thieves are increasingly targeting Volkswagen vehicles to steal expensive radar sensors hidden behind front emblems. These thefts, particularly frequent in London, leave owners with costly repair bills exceeding €2,000 and disabled driver-assistance systems. While VW offers some financial support, the devices are essentially useless once removed, as they require specific electronic coding for each vehicle.

Replacement can also be extremely expensive. Coleman received a quote of almost £2,000 ($2,600) for a new sign and radar unit. Fortunately, due to the frequent thefts, Volkswagen UK offers a support package for local customers, which eventually reduced her repair bill to around €600, but that’s still a significant amount.

Support varies by service history. Since radar units cannot be reused without VW coding, victims argue that publicizing this fact would deter theft. VW, however, previously withheld this info, fearing it might attract more crime. Currently, owners like Coleman are resorting to covering emblems to prevent theft.

Of course, this problem extends far beyond Britain. An increasing number of cars of different brands are being targeted by thieves as other manufacturers are also placing radar units behind the front signs. These thefts are a growing headache throughout New York City. The problem has become so severe that some companies now sell protective covers that can be placed over the sensors to secure them.

The thefts also prompted a Change.org petition calling on Volkswagen to investigate the problem, warn owners of affected models, tighten anti-theft measures and soften the financial blow to victims. At the time of writing, the petition has gathered hundreds of signatures from owners who claim the problem has been going on for years.
