How can one avoid an auto-mishap after a night of drinking or using recreational drugs?
In this Autojosh.com article, we highlight various tactics that can be used to arrive home safely and avoid alcohol-related car accidents.
Prepare ahead of time
Make plans for how you intend to return home before going out for a drinking session. Consider whether there are any safe alternatives to driving home. Then choose one of these.
Keep your car parked at home
Take public transportation to the happy hour’s location. Leaving your car at home ensures that you will not be involved in a car accident. That is, unless you chose to be driven home by a similarly inebriated driver.
Take a walk home
If your house is within walking distance, go for a walk. Walking has the added benefit of helping to wear out the alcohol in your system. However, there is a risk associated with a drunk pedestrian.
It’s also a good idea to walk home with a friend or two. It’s also a good way to get some exercise and potentially sober up a little to avoid a headache the next day.
Download a Ride-Sharing App (Uber, Taxify, Oga Taxi, etc)
To get to the event and back, use a ride-sharing service. Apart from the convenience, driving yourself home is a safer choice. When you request a trip on one of these platforms, you reduce your chances of being taken advantage of, having your fare defrauded, or even being robbed by the driver.
Take a ride with someone who hasn’t had any alcohol or drugs.
Request a ride from someone who did not partake in the drinking or use of recreational substances at the venue.
Stay away from major highways
Never cross a major highway, especially if doing so is dangerous or unlawful. If there is a pedestrian bridge nearby, take advantage of it. On routes with a speed restriction greater than 30 mph, use extreme caution.
Park your car at the bar or drinking establishment.
If you find yourself too tipsy to drive after an impromptu visit to a bar, lounge, or other drinking establishment, especially one you are quite familiar with, you can leave your car there.
Spend the night at a friend’s residence
If you are too inebriated to drive home, stay at a friend’s house close to the rendezvous location.
Dress in brightly colored or reflective clothing.
Wear a bright-colored cloth or have reflective items in your bag if you plan on walking back home. This is to reduce the chances of being hit by a car that couldn’t see you.
Use a sober driver.
If you are certain that you will be too inebriated to drive home, bring a sober driver with you.
