Toyota Australia Set To Fit A 5.0 V8 Engine To A Racing Version GR Supra

Yes, the Toyota GR Supra will get a V8 engine in 2026, but only in a racing version, ready for the Australian Supercars Championship.
This will make Toyota the third automaker to join the fray, with the GR Supra V8 taking on the likes of the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.
Currently under development, the GR Supra V8 race car will meet the GEN3 regulations of the Supercars Championship. Designed by Toyota Australia in Altona, the project has already been presented through digital renderings.
In addition to extensive aerodynamic and chassis modifications, the GR Supra will swap its inline-6 BMW engine for a 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. The full specifications of the race car will be revealed at a later date.
The V8 Supra will wear the colors of Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) and will be driven by Cez Mostert and Rajan Wood.
Rajan Walkinshaw, director of WAU, points out: “We have developed a fantastic relationship with Toyota Australia through the Walkinshaw Group, and we are delighted to extend that partnership to Walkinshaw Andretti United – we can’t wait to share success together in 2026 and beyond.”
Sean Henley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing and franchises, said: “At Toyota, we’ve been toying with the idea of competing in Supercars for over 20 years, and now with the right car, the right team and a very strong partnership with the Repco Supercars Championship, the time is definitely right.”
Toyota claims its entry into Supercars will “provide valuable knowledge for the further development of its GR road cars”. But don’t get your hopes up for a V8-powered GR Supra in a production road car.
