Toyota Prius Owner Welded Iron Bars Underneath The Car To Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft
This catalytic converter-theft-proof Toyota Prius sedan is on sale in the U.S – but, will thieves have a rethink?
It has a massive steel cage that had been welded to the car’s underbody to prevent thiefs from stealing its catalytic converter.
Found inside the car exhaust system, catalytic converter contains precious metals such as palladium and rhodium.
Catalytic converter help turns the hazardous exhaust gasses emitted by an engine into less toxic pollutants.
A 2012 Toyota Prius sedan recently came up for sale on Los Angeles (L.A) Craigslist and unlike most cars on sale at the online site, this car boast a feature that will make a catalytic converter thief to have a rethink.
According to the listing, the seller is asking $11,000 for the Prius that they said is “catalytic converter-theft-proof,” thanks to a massive steel cage that had been welded to the car’s underbody to prevent thiefs from stealing its catalytic converter.
“Got [the] rebar professionally placed underneath the car so that the catalytic converter will not get stolen,” the listing reads, adding that “You will never need to worry about the catalytic converter being stolen,” to address the massive cage.
Thefts of catalytic converters are a big deal in the United States, though State Farm auto claims data shows a decline in thefts in the first half of 2023, were it received around 14,500 catalytic converter theft claims compared to the over 23,000 received during the same period in 2022.
Found inside the car exhaust system, catalytic converter, popularly known in Nigeria as Indomie, contains precious metals such as palladium and rhodium which help turns the hazardous exhaust gasses emitted by an engine into less toxic pollutants.
These precious metals now worth 20 times more than gold make catalytic converters a lucrative target for criminals as well as Nigerian mechanics and panel beaters, who steal them from unwary customers.
