Volvo V90 Has Been Discontinued As Production Ends Next Month

The largest and most luxurious station wagon in the Volvo car range will soon go down in history. Production of the popular Volvo V90 model will end in September, which has been officially confirmed to Autocar.

The official statement states that the discontinuation of this large station wagon is in line with the company’s global cycle plan. The decision follows the discontinuation of the related S90 sedan last year to make room for the new ES90 electric liftback. It is expected that this model will reach the market of the United Kingdom at the beginning of next year, but it is not yet known whether a traditional station wagon version will also come from it.

When asked if Volvo could abandon wagon production for good, then-CEO Jim Rowan replied at the launch of the ES90, “Yes, because I think that has changed, hasn’t it? SUVs have changed with ride height.”

Rowan suggested that the ES90’s elevated seating position means it overlaps somewhat with the SUV segment. Additionally, its five-door trunk and 40:20:40 split rear seats give it wagon-like functionality.

He added that the XC60 SUV could be repositioned to fill the void left by the departure of the V90. “Instead of, for example, bringing the V90, is it better to position [XC60] in a slightly different way? We have the Black Edition, and we have the Cross Country Edition. So now we have different editions of the same basic car.” Rowan’s successor, Håkan Samuelsson, has not yet announced a change of direction.
