GM plans to launch an eyes-off autonomous driving system in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, leveraging data from its Super Cruise and Cruise programs to expand beyond current hands-free technology.

The carmaker has officially announced its intention to launch an “eyes-off” autonomous driving system by 2028, debuting in the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Unlike current SAE Level 2 driver-assistance technologies, such as Ford’s BlueCruise, this system is designed to permit drivers to divert their attention from the road under compatible conditions. This initiative will integrate insights gained from GM’s existing Super Cruise technology alongside developmental data from its autonomous ride-hailing subsidiary, Cruise.

GM’s Super Cruise has surpassed one billion hands-free miles, fueling consumer trust as John Kaychi leads development of a new “eyes-off” driving system. While GM ended funding for Cruise’s robotaxi unit in 2024, the program’s AI and testing expertise remain vital. The company is now leveraging telemetry, fleet data, and simulations to advance its upcoming technology, despite ongoing legal scrutiny regarding its past handling of driver data.

Undertaking such a venture, despite the inherent risks associated with autonomous software, represents a bold and significant strategic pivot for General Motors. John Kaychi, a former Zoox executive now spearheading the initiative, asserts that the retail market is prepared for this evolution, stating, “True autonomy has not yet been achieved; however, GM is uniquely positioned to lead this next chapter by bringing automated driving to consumers at scale.”

Meanwhile, competitors are aggressively pursuing similar advancements. Rivian, whose R1S model directly competes with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, is targeting the rollout of eyes-off driving capabilities by 2027, with plans to introduce Level 4 robotaxis in 2028 through a strategic partnership with Uber.
