An Indian police officer pulled off a real-life Spider-Man or Batman stunt after clinging to the roof of a speeding Hyundai Creta SUV for nearly 40 kilometres (25 miles) during a dramatic anti-smuggling chase in Tamil Nadu.

The incident occurred in Coimbatore on Sunday, September 27, when Head Constable M. Velmurugan and other officers were conducting a vehicle check following intelligence that banned tobacco products were allegedly being transported from Bengaluru.

After police identified a white Hyundai Creta with a Karnataka registration number and attempted to stop it, the occupants allegedly refused to cooperate and sped away, triggering a high-speed pursuit.

In a scene resembling something straight out of a Spider-Man movie, Velmurugan climbed onto the roof of the moving SUV and held tightly onto its roof rails as the driver continued speeding towards Avinashi.

Reports said the SUV travelled for nearly 40 kilometres (25 miles), at times exceeding 100 km/h (62 mph), while the officer remained on its roof. After police alerted the National Highways Authority of India, an ambulance was deployed to ensure the officer’s safety.

According to police, three men were arrested after the vehicle was eventually blocked near Mangalam Junction in Tiruppur. Officers also seized a large quantity of banned gutka and other tobacco products, with reports putting the consignment at more than 100 kg.

“I got atop the SUV in an attempt to stop them. But they sped away. I clung onto the rails, determined not to give up,” 38-year-old Velmurugan said, explaining that he climbed onto the SUV after realising that the suspects were determined to escape.
