With The Flick Of A Switch, Porsche’s Iconic “Racing Stripes” Appear On The Body

Buying a sports car often involves a seemingly trivial, but in fact permanent, decision: whether to choose racing stripes or not. Once they’re on the body, there’s no going back without extra expense and quite a bit of hassle. Porsche is now offering a solution that sounds like science fiction but could become a reality.

The German manufacturer has patented a technology that allows the appearance of the body to change at the push of a button. Instead of classic paint or stickers, a so-called optically variable coating that reacts to electricity is used. When activated, the surface can change appearance, for example, from a completely clean body to a car with accented racing stripes.

The technology is not completely new; similar systems already exist for panoramic windows that can be tinted or transparent, but Porsche goes a step further and transfers the concept to the body sheet. In practice, this means that in normal driving mode, the car could look elegant and restrained, and in Sport mode, it could acquire the visual identity of a racing machine, with stripes and additional decorations.

But the story doesn’t stop there. In the patent, Porsche also mentions the functional application of this technology, especially in electric models. Instead of checking the app or looking at the screen, the driver could read the battery status from the outside before getting into the car. The color or intensity of the light on the body would change depending on the charge: green for a full battery, yellow for middle, and red when it’s time to charge.

Such a solution could be useful on the racetrack as well. When you have multiple identical cars on the track, visual details like stripes make them easier to distinguish. If they can be changed in real time, a whole new dimension of personalization and functionality opens up.

Porsche does not reveal whether and when this technology will enter series production, but it is clear that the idea aligns perfectly with the direction the industry is moving. Cars are increasingly envisioned as digital products that change, upgrade and adapt. If the patent turns into a reality, the racing strip decision will no longer be permanent but just another option on the menu.
