Xiaomi Said Ripping 3 Tesla Model Ys Apart Helped Developed Its Fastest-selling U7 Electric SUV
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said ripping 3 Tesla Model Ys apart helped developed its fastest-selling electric U7 SUV.
Lei also said that the final version of the Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV definitely does not lose to the Model Y.
He had earlier said a decision by the Trump to sanction Xiaomi in early 2021 led it into the lucrative EV market.

China’s Xiaomi says that the company bought and ripped three (3) brand new Tesla Model Y mid-sized SUVs apart to study its electric platform for development of their now-fastest-selling electric car lineups.
Xiaomi Chief Executive Lei Jun said this to a large crowd on Thursday September 25th 2025 during his annual speech at the Beijing National Convention Center.

“We bought 3 Model Ys at the start of this year, disassembling the parts one by one, and studied every component, one at a time,” adding that he found Model Y to be a really good car.

Lei also said that the final version of the Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV, which starts at $35k, “definitely does not lose to the Model Y”, priced from $36,760.
“I’m not criticizing the Model Y. The Model Y is a very, very outstanding car,” Lei noted, adding that “If you don’t choose YU7, you can consider Model Y.”

Lei Jun had earlier said a decision by the Trump administration to sanction the Chinese company in early 2021 led it into the lucrative electric vehicle (EV) market.
“I received a phone call from a friend saying that we had been sanctioned. It was like a bolt from the blue,” Lei said at an event back in July 2024 streamed by more than 1.5 million people on WeChat.
“If it weren’t for the huge impact of the unexpected U.S. sanctions, we would not have rashly entered the complex automotive industry.”
