“We Need Lower Cars” Is Volvo’s Belief For Station Wagons In The Future

Volvo sells only one station wagon, and it is on its last legs. However, Volvo’s top boss believes in a future for station wagons. “We need lower cars,” says the brand’s top executive.
Late last year, Volvo slammed the V90 order books shut with a dull thud. The brand, perhaps best known for its angular station wagons, currently sells only one model with that body style: the V60. The Volvo V60 was recently technically modernized, but with a birth year of 2018, the years are starting to take their toll on the car. Is it completely over and out for the station wagon at Volvo after the V60, and will they only sell SUVs, a large liftback (ES90), and an MPV (EM90) from then on? Probably not.
The product and strategy boss previously hinted to The Drive that the brand is still interested in station wagons, and Volvo executive Håkan Samuelsson goes a step further. Speaking to Motor1, the CEO says that the automotive market is too heavily weighted toward SUVs and that ‘low cars are needed’, partly due to air resistance and the range of electric powertrains.
Moreover, Samuelsson cannot imagine that Volvo will only be offering SUVs in five years. The executive is referring to the American market, where the ES90 and EM90 are currently not being delivered and where Volvo—alongside the V60—indeed only has SUVs on the menu.
