Toyota Upgrades The Tacoma Pickup TRD Pro And Trail Edition For 2022 Model Year
Toyota is continuing its practice of introducing running updates to the off-road-ready versions of its Tacoma mid-size pickup truck, which for 2022 include the Trail Edition and TRD Pro.
The Tacoma Trail Edition is the milder option here, building on the Tacoma’s SR5 grade by adding more standard goodies like coloured accents inside and out, all-weather floor liners, plus a cooler-style storage compartment and 120-volt power outlet in the bed. As the name suggests, the Trail Edition is all about enhancing practicality when in the outdoors. The Trail Edition is strictly a Double Cab 4×4 affair with a standard rear locking differential. It gets a retro-flavoured front grille with bronze lettering and sits on 16-inch wheels featuring the same bronze finish. This one too benefits from a suspension lift (1.1-inch front and 0.5-inch rear), resulting in a 34-degree approach angle, a 23.6-degree departure angle, and a 26.4-degree break-over angle.

Meanwhile, the new TRD Pro package offers a 1.5-inch lift at the front and a similar 0.5-inch lift at the back. The lift helps improve its approach angle to 36.4 degrees, its departure angle to 24.7 degrees, and its break-over angle to 24.7 degrees, all of which are better than the last. Its lifts come from TRD-tuned Fox internal bypass shocks that are designed to be good on- and off-road. Improving performance are machine-forged aluminium upper control arms that allow the front shocks to make use of the extra rebound stroke thanks to an adjusted ball-joint mount.
In both the Trail Edition and TRD Pro, Toyota fits the Tacoma’s 3.5-litre V-6 option as standard. The V-6 delivers 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, versus the 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of the 2.7-litre inline-4 fitted as standard to most Tacomas. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.
