VW Working Tirelessly On Wireless Charging Breakthrough That Can Charge EV Battery To 80% In 10 Mins
Volkswagen working tirelessly on wireless charging breakthrough that can charge EV battery-packs to 80% in just 10 minutes.
It partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee to explore ways to achieving the goal.
Early trials are promising, as the team has been able to ramp up the power from 6.6 kW to 120 kW.
But the goal is to reach a 300 kW power level, which would allow the Taycan to charge to 80% in just 10 minutes.
Volkswagen of America has expanded its research collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee to explore ways on how to integrate breakthroughs in material science.
The collaboration will aim to develop and improve on future technology, including a goal of developing a higher-power wireless charger that will be able to charge a Porsche Taycan as fast as buying a fuel.
According Volkswagen Group of America, the three will “explore how to integrate breakthroughs in material science and recycling concepts to support electric mobility and sustainable transportation.”
The Auto giant says the trio are experimenting with the Porsche Taycan in an effort to bring wireless charging times down. Early trials are promising, as the team has been able to ramp up the power from 6.6 kW to 120 kW.

But the goal is to reach a 300 kW power level, which would allow the Porsche Taycan EV to charge to 80 percent in just 10 minutes with an efficiency of 98%, using ORNL’s high-power wireless EV charging concept.
“We are excited to work with Volkswagen to demonstrate ORNL’s high-powered, ultra-efficient wireless charging technology,” said Xin Sun, Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Science and Technology at ORNL.
“Our unique polyphase electromagnetic coil design and power electronics provide high power transfer levels in a compact system, with the potential to alleviate electric vehicle range anxiety and speed the decarbonization of the U.S. transportation sector.”
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng recently announced a similar charging power that could replenish up to 200 km (124 miles) of range within just 5 minutes or a 10-80% charging time of just 12 minutes.
But unlike XPeng’s charging tech, which requires plugging the electric vehicle with a cable to a power supply, Volkswagen aims to achieve this feat through wireless charging.
