8 Driving Requirements For Tourists And Visitors In Nigeria

Driving in another man’s land could be an adventure to some while being a nightmare to others. In order to have an effortless experience, it is important to have an understanding of the driving laws that apply to such land. Therefore, you need to equip yourself with the following information on the requirements for driving in Nigeria before you do:
- You must be familiar with the Nigeria road network or use a GPS (Global Positioning System) for easy navigation.
- Show evidence that you are permitted to import your vehicle temporarily (if any) into Nigeria.
- Ensure that the vehicle you are driving is road worthy and has the following :
- Vehicle licence.
- Vehicle Inspection Certificate.
- Proof of Ownership Certificate.
- Road Worthiness Certificate.
- National Vehicle Identification Tag
- Any other vehicle document that is deemed to be relevant.

- Ensure that such vehicle carry the number plate of the country of origin affixed to the appropriate spaces at the front and rear of the vehicle.
- If the vehicle is to remain in Nigeria for more than 90 days, you are required to change the number plate to a Nigerian number plate.
- Ensure that you have an international driving permit issued from your country as well as your country’s normal driving licence.
- If you intend to drive in Nigeria for more than 30 days, you must obtain the appropriate Nigeria driver’s licence for the category of your vehicle.
- Ensure you have details of your host, local agent of the organization you are representing and your country’s embassy in case you miss your way.
