Retro-style Hongqi L5 Limo Dubbed “Rolls-Royce Of China” Debut As China’s Most Expensive Car

New-generation Hongqi L5 limousine debuts with familiar retro looks and as China’s poshest and most expensive car.
Latest-generation L5 replaces its outgoing 2014 predecessor that arrived in the Chinese market in 2013.
L5 displayed in Shanghai Auto finished in two-tone white and blue paint retains the retro headlight and monster grille.
It gets redesigned front end with a new lower grille. The rear gets redesigned bumper with monster exhausts and upright LED lighting.
The latest-generation Hongqi L5 flagship sedan has made its debut at the 20th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (or Auto Shanghai 2023), replacing its 2014 predecessor that arrived in 2013.
Dubbed as the “Rolls-Royce of China”, the flagship Hongqi L5, a limited-edition retro styled luxury car from the oldest automaker in China, is the most expensive Chinese-made car ever.
The L5 displayed in Shanghai Auto 2023 finished in two-tone white and blue paint scheme retains the retro headlight and monster grille. It gets a redesigned front end with a new lower grille while the rear gets a redesigned bumper with monster exhausts and upright LED lighting.
Technical specifications and pricing are still unknown, but its predecessor offered a 402bhp 6.0-litre V12 and 381bhp a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8. It starts around 6 million yuan ($868,000 at the current exchange), which is more expensive than Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Hongqi, the Shenzhen-based carmaker, which translates to Red Flag, is known for flagship limousines used by China’s leaders from Mao Zedong to the current president, Xi Jinping.
Just like cars from Rolls-Royce, Bentley and the Century by Toyota, the Chinese-only Hongqi L5 is aimed at billionaire businessmen and super stars who want to show off their being-Chinese credentials.
The Hongqi L5 can compete with Russian-made Aurus Senat L700 and the British hand-made Rolls-Royce Phantom 8 in the marketplace. But in reality, this unique and ultra-luxury China-only limo doesn’t really compete with anything.
