The European Union is determined to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from new passenger cars. However, the European automotive industry is alarmed about the potential repercussions. Stellantis boldly warns that these regulations could threaten production capabilities in Europe.

There have been several warnings from various corners of the European car industry about the negative consequences of the emission requirements that the EU wants to impose. With effect, because in 2023 the plans for the Euro 7 requirements were adjusted, and earlier this year it was announced that car manufacturers will have more time to meet the CO₂ targets. Stellantis fears that it is not enough. Through CFO Jean-Philippe Imparato, a fresh warning is heard from the mega-concern.

Imparato believes that the upcoming targets are still ‘unattainable’ and fears a €2.5 billion fine for Stellantis within a few years. This is reported by  Automotive News. According to him, there are two options. Stellantis must ‘go crazy with EVs,’ or production of fuel cars must be cancelled. According to him, the latter will cost European factories their lives. Imparato does not indicate which of the two options he expects to go, but the warning is clear. He hopes for changes in the upcoming regulations, because otherwise such ‘difficult decisions’ await.
