Although Range Rover’s Screens Are Getting Smaller, Buttons Won’t Be Returning

Vehicle interiors have become over-reliant on touchscreens, leading to consumer demand for a return to physical buttons. While some automakers are responding by scaling back screen sizes, others continue to prioritize screen-heavy designs.

Toyota and Honda, alongside Hyundai and Kia, serve as leading examples of automotive manufacturers that have maintained the use of physical buttons. Furthermore, Volkswagen has addressed consumer concerns regarding interior design in its ID. series by balancing essential physical controls with appropriately sized screens. In a similar move, Land Rover—specifically the Range Rover brand—has now committed to reducing the prevalence of oversized touchscreens in its vehicle interiors.

Range Rover is reducing screen sizes in future models to mirror the upcoming GT’s interior. While this moves away from oversized displays, the brand remains committed to extreme minimalism, meaning physical buttons will remain scarce as they prioritize a distraction-free, “sanctuary” cabin design.

The British automaker is bucking the industry trend of screen-heavy, “noisy” interiors by prioritizing a minimalist, “tranquil sanctuary” design. While the brand is reducing display sizes in future models to mirror the GT, they are not returning to physical buttons. Instead, they are stripping back technology to eliminate visual and acoustic clutter, using only the essential screens needed to provide information without distraction.
