Volkswagen Discontinues The ID.Buzz For The US Market
The journey for the new electric Buzz has just hit a major speed bump as Volkswagen confirmed that it will not make a 2026 model of the ID. Buzz for the US market.
The issue arose when certain car dealers started telling customers that the ID. Buzz was being completely discontinued. Buyers reported that some sales staff claimed the existing inventory would be the final opportunity to purchase one. Although car salespeople sometimes use these tactics to pressure buyers, the rumors prompted the company to clarify. A brand spokesperson stated that skipping the 2026 model year was a strategic decision based on the current EV market conditions.
Cost is a major reason why the ID. Buzz is struggling to find its footing. The original bus was famous because it was simple and cheap. The new electric version is quite the opposite. In the United States, the price of the ID. Buzz starts at nearly $60,000 and can go up to $70,000 for high-end versions—surprisingly much lower than in Europe. This high price makes it difficult for families to justify the Buzz over other electric cars—the price tag is simply too heavy for most budgets.
Volkswagen is trying to stay positive about the future of the vehicle. The company says the ID. Buzz remains an important “halo” product that showcases what the brand can do. Instead of building new ones for 2026, the company wants dealers to focus on selling the 2025 models they already have on their lots. They are calling this a “transition” period. The goal is to clear out old stock before potentially bringing the van back for the 2027 model year.
Many people want to drive electric cars, but high prices and changing government rules make buyers nervous. For the ID. Buzz to survive in the long run, Volkswagen will have to rethink its strategy. Experts suggest the company might need to lower the price or offer more features to make the van worth the asking price. If the 2027 model does arrive, it will need to prove it can be more than just a nostalgic trophy for wealthy collectors.
For now, if you see an ID. Buzz on a dealer lot, it might be one of the few available for a while. The 2025 model is still available for sale, but a significant gap will occur before any new models arrive. Volkswagen is essentially hitting the pause button to see if the market improves. Will the electric bus ever become a permanent fixture on American roads? At the moment, it looks like it will be short-lived.
