Germany Ranks Second In EV And PHEV Production
According to the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Germany will become the second-largest producer of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) in the world by 2025, behind China.
According to the VDA, 1.22 million electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids were produced in Germany last year, a national record and 15 percent more than the 2024 figure. The increase in production in Germany reflects a general trend in the European market, which saw sales of electric vehicles in Europe rise by almost 30 percent last year to around 2.6 million vehicles.
China remains the world leader by a wide margin, producing 16.1 million NEVs annually, including electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, range-extender models, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
A total of 4.15 million passenger cars were produced in Germany during the year, 2 percent more than in 2024. At the same time, the production structure has shifted significantly towards electrification. Almost 30 percent of all vehicles produced are fully electric, and taking plug-in hybrids into account, the share of electrified vehicles has reached around 40 percent.
Volkswagen remains the largest manufacturer and seller of electric vehicles in Europe. In 2025, the brand sold almost 275,000 electric vehicles, increasing sales by 56 percent compared to the previous year. On the other hand, Tesla saw sales in Europe fall by 27 percent, with 238,765 vehicles rolling off the assembly line.
