₦6.8 Million And No Car: EFCC Arraigns Man Over Alleged Toyota Camry Fraud In Abuja
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Idris Gana Mohammed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja, on a one-count charge of criminal misappropriation and obtaining money by false pretence.
According to the EFCC, the defendant was arrested following a petition over an alleged fraud of ₦6,850,000 paid by the petitioner for the purchase of a black Toyota Camry from Ampatech Nigeria Limited. The anti-graft agency said the defendant allegedly failed to deliver the vehicle or refund the money.
The charge stated that Mohammed, sometime between June 10 and 13, 2026, dishonestly converted the sum meant for the purchase of the black Toyota Camry to his personal use, thereby committing an offence against the law.
The EFCC said the alleged offence was contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code Law of the FCT and punishable under Section 309 of the same law. When the charge was read to him, Mohammed pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Abdullahi adjourned the matter until September 24, 2026, for commencement of trial. The court also ordered that Mohammed be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The case comes amid continued warnings from government agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), over fraudulent vehicle sales and fake automobile advertisements targeting prospective car buyers in Nigeria.
In April 2026, the NCS warned the public about a fake Instagram account falsely claiming to be affiliated with the Service. The agency said the account was an impersonation scheme intended to defraud unsuspecting members of the public and advised people not to make payments through such channels.
