AMG is 55 years old and to kick off the celebrations, Mercedes-AMG has just released a special edition G63 AMG called “Edition 55” which will go on sale in Europe in October this year.

The G63 Edition 55 is available in Obsidian Black Metallic or G Manufaktur Opalite White. A decal on the lower portion of the doors has a stylized AMG emblem. There’s also the AMG Night Package and Night Package II, which add plenty of dark accents. The fuel cap is chrome and has AMG branding. These SUVs ride on 22-inched forged wheels with a cross-spoke design and a Matt Tantalum Grey finish.

Inside, stainless steel interior trim contrasts well with the black/red leather. Illuminated red AMG lettering welcomes the driver on the door sills, with special “Edition 55” floor mats made from high-quality velour with red contrast stitching. Even the microfibre-wrapped steering wheel gets a “55” badge. The cabin is finished with matte carbon trim pieces, adding a more sporty vibe.

Customers who already own the G63 AMG but want the Edition 55 treatment can do so for a $19,719 price tag.

Under the hood, it’s stock G 63, which means a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that develops 577 hp (585 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, all of which gets dished out to both axles via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Three differential locks are standing by in the unlikely event that you want to take your SUV into the wilderness, while the double-wishbone suspension and adaptive dampers should prevent that happening unless you really do want it to.

In its announcement of this model, AMG reports “more birthday surprises will follow in the coming months.”
