BMW Cancel Multi Billion Euros Battery Deal With Northvolt
BMW cancels an order worth no less than 2 billion euros with the European battery manufacturer Northvolt. The two also want to work together in the future.
“Northvolt and the BMW Group have jointly decided to focus Northvolt’s activities on the development of next-generation battery cells,” BMW said, according to Reuters. That sounds a bit like a boss showing a poorly functioning employee the door with a pat on the back (“We can’t do without you, but we’re going to try anyway”), but apparently BMW thought it wise not to do business with Northvolt yet. to go.
The order concerned battery cells that BMW itself wanted to fuse into battery packs for the i4 and iX, among others, according to Automotive News Europe. Instead of Northvolt, BMW would have chosen Samsung as a partner for this delivery, so the deal would not have gone to China. Northvolt was said to be behind schedule and making too many mistakes in production, which would have been the main reason for BMW to deviate. However, BMW is not shooting Northvolt completely but would still like to call on Europe’s largest battery builder for future Neue Klasse cars. Northvolt comes from Sweden, has a large factory there, and is expanding within and outside Sweden. A second Swedish factory would be in doubt, but that does not seem to be a direct consequence of BMW’s move.
