BMW Set To RIval The Mercedes G Wagon With An Off-Road Oriented SUV Of Its Own
BMW will add a model to its lineup specially designed for off-road adventures. The new model will essentially be a future rival to the Mercedes G-Class, as well as to the Land Rover Defender, according to new information appearing in the British media.
According to initial reports, the future BMW SUV will be a seven-seat model and will be produced in the United States at BMW’s Spartanburg plant. The code name of the model is G74.
The details of the powertrain are still shrouded in mystery, but it seems that the new model will be based on a modified version of the CLAR architecture. There is a possibility that the future BMW G74 will be powered by an electrified version equipped with an internal combustion engine as a range extender.
The launch of the future BMW off-road model is expected to take place in 2029. While BMW isn’t known for G-Class-level SUVs, this won’t be the first model created specifically for off-road driving. This honor belongs to the BMW 325, an off-road model that was produced between 1937 and 1940 for the German army. Only 3,225 examples were produced, and that model had a 2.0-litre inline 6 engine that developed only 50 horsepower. The engine was mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, along with three locking differentials and four-wheel drive.
