Opel to close one of its assembly plant in Germany until the end of the year due to a shortage of chips.

The Eisenach plant makes internal combustion engines and hybrid electric cars.

Production at the plant is expected to resume in 2022, although Opel has not set a date.

German automaker, Opel, which is part of the Stellantis group, said on Thursday it would temporarily shut down one of its factories in Germany at least until the end of the year due to a shortage of chips.

Production at the Eisenach plant, which makes internal combustion engines and hybrid electric cars, is expected to resume in 2022, although an Opel spokesperson could not give a date.

Some 1,300 workers employed at the plant will be temporarily laid off, said Opel, a separate factory in France taking over part of the production.

Stellantis has halted production at other factories, including in Europe and Canada, predicting it would manufacture 1.4 million fewer vehicles this year due to the chip shortage.
