EU Regulations Allows EVs To Produce V8 Engine Noises Outside Of The Cabin
One of the advantages of electric mobility is less noise pollution. But that could soon change, writes Auto Bild. The EU will soon issue a standard for artificial engine sounds that will be heard outside the vehicle itself. For example, V8 engine sounds and gear changes will be simulated.
The so-called External Sound Enhancement System (ESES) consists of a sound generator and speakers. It should not be confused with the Acoustic Vehicle Warning System (AVAS), which is mandatory from 2019. The new system plays on emotions. Namely, car lovers think that electric cars are soulless because there is no engine sound. Car manufacturers already sell the option under names like Electric Sport Sound (Porsche) or ID. Sound (VW), and now the complete system of simulated external sounds should be legalized. The system will be able to be activated and deactivated.
For now, it is not known how many decibels will be allowed…
