BMW To Use Humanoids To Assemble Batteries, After One Helped To Produce 30,000 X3 SUVs
BMW to use AI Humanoids to assembly high‑voltage batteries at its Leipzig plant in Germany.
It follows the successful deployment of Figure 02 at its Spartanburg plant in U.S, which supported the production of 30,000 X3s.


Following the successful test-runs at its Spartanburg plant in the United States, the BMW Group has announced plans to deploy another AI-powered robot, the AEON, at its Leipzig plant in Germany to help assemble its latest models at lower cost.
During the pilot phase at its Leipzig plant starting in summer 2026, the German car giant said that the human‑like, AI-powered robots will be used in the assembly of high‑voltage batteries and in component manufacturing.


“Our aim is to be a technology leader and to integrate new technologies into production at an early stage. Pilot projects help us to test and further develop the use of Physical AI – that is, AI‑enabled robots capable of learning – under real-world industrial conditions,” said Michael Nikolaides, who is the Head of Production Network and Logistics at BMW AG.

“We are very pleased to be working with the BMW Group to advance the use of humanoid robots in real‑world environments,” said Arnaud Robert, President of Hexagon Robotics – a long‑standing partner of the BMW Group in the field of sensor technology and software.
BMW first deployed Hexagon’s humanoid robot, the AEON, at the Group’s plant in Leipzig in December 2025. Before the actual pilot phase starting in summer 2026, BMW plans a further test deployment from April 2026 to ensure full integration.


It follows the successful deployment of Figure 02, a 2nd-gen humanoid robot with two-legged mobility and advanced dexterity, at its Spartanburg plant in the United States, which it said supported the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3.
According to BMW, Figure 02 worked ten-hour shifts daily from Monday to Friday during the pilot, moving more than 90,000 components and covering approximately 1.2 million steps in around 1,250 operating hours.
