Number plate, ‘AU 1’, which features the symbol of gold and worth $380,000 spotted on a Rolls-Royce Spectre.

The prized ‘AU 1’ UK number plate was made famous by the 1963 James Bond film, ‘Goldfinger’.

It featured on a two-tone black and yellow 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedanca de Ville in the 1963 film.

In the film, the Phantom III was used by the villain, Auric Goldfinger, to smuggle gold across Europe.

The sought-after number plate, ‘AU 1’, which was advertised for sale by Primo Registrations in November 2023 for £300,000 (approximately $380,000) and later sold, was recently spotted on a Rolls-Royce Spectre parked on a street in the United Kingdom.

“The last time ‘AU 1’ sold, it realised a huge return on investment for its then-owner, and we anticipate the trend will only continue, especially with shorter plates,” the managing director of Primo Registrations, Peter Johnson, said at the time.

Made famous by the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’, the number plate, which features the chemical symbol for Gold is ‘Au’, was featured on a two-tone black and yellow 1937 Phantom III Sedanca de Ville in the 1963 film.

In the 1964 spy film starring Sean Connery as the fictional MI6 agent, the 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III was used by the villain, Auric Goldfinger, to smuggle gold across Europe.

To celebrate 60 years anniversary of the film’s premiere in 2024, Rolls-Royce made a one-off Phantom VIII Goldfinger commissioned by a collector, which was also fitted with the prized British numberplate ‘AU 1’.

At the unveiling, Rolls-Royce said that one-off Phantom VIII Goldfinger based on the $550,000+ Phantom Extended has now been delivered to one of its client and collector based in England.

“Bringing Phantom Goldfinger into being was one of the Bespoke Collective’s greatest creative journeys to date,” said Nick Rhodes, Bespoke Designer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
