Honda To Renegotiate With Nissan Again If CEO Resigns

Published

The Honda-Nissan merger is not entirely off the table. According to the Financial Times, Honda is keeping the possibility alive, albeit slightly. However, a major catalyst is needed for that door to open more significantly.

Honda and Nissan have recently terminated exploratory discussions regarding a potential merger. According to reports from the Financial Times, none of the proposed scenarios met the satisfaction of either side. Honda has indicated that a merger could still be possible, but only if Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida resigns. Nissan has not commented on this matter to the Financial Times, and Honda claims that the information reported by the newspaper did not originate from their circles.

Nissan is said to have a subordinate role in Honda’s proposals. In addition, Honda is said to want to provide the CEO for the new company. Nissan—not entirely unimaginably—was not happy with this. In the meantime, Nissan is working on a major reform plan—in which thousands of employees will lose their jobs—to at least get things back on track financially.
