Honda’s First Electric SUV Is Already Being Retired
Honda is discontinuing the Prologue after the 2026 model year, ending the brand’s sole U.S. EV offering as it pivots toward hybrid and gas models following poor sales and the loss of federal tax credits.
Although the Honda Prologue was intended to herald a new era of electrification for the Japanese automaker, the vehicle failed to meet expectations. During initial testing, the model was found to be underwhelming, primarily due to its reliance on a shared platform with the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which resulted in a design and interior that felt derivative of General Motors. Furthermore, the Prologue lacked the acceleration and driving dynamics synonymous with the Honda brand.
These shortcomings, compounded by a nearly 50% decline in sales during the first half of 2026, ultimately led to the vehicle’s discontinuation. A Honda spokesperson confirmed the decision to CarBuzz, stating, “Honda will conclude sales of the Prologue later this year following the completion of the 2026 model year. Prologue customers will continue to receive full support through our dealer network, including service, parts, and warranty coverage.”
Honda scaled back its EV strategy this year by canceling three planned models and its Sony partnership due to low demand and high development costs. The Prologue’s discontinuation follows these shifts; as a premium-priced midsize SUV, it struggled to compete, whereas a more affordable, compact EV might have better aligned with Honda’s brand identity.
Despite leaving the U.S. EV market with the Prologue’s exit, Honda remains strong. With record June sales and the CR-V leading as America’s top-selling SUV, the brand is successfully pivoting toward hybrids, which now comprise 30% of its sales. By abandoning unprofitable EV projects, Honda aims to launch 15 new hybrids globally by 2029, including new D-segment models for the U.S. market to better meet consumer demand.
