The Electric GT “Shouldn’t Exist”, According To A Mercedes Executive.
Automakers are boosting EV adoption through faster charging, longer ranges, and lower prices. Luxury brands are even adding simulated gears and engine sounds to mimic traditional gas-powered vehicles.
Despite these advancements, widespread consumer adoption remains elusive. The skepticism is so significant that even senior executives at Mercedes-Benz have expressed frustration regarding the latest AMG GT 4-Door and its electric powertrain.
A statement from a Mercedes official recently surfaced in the German publication Manager Magazin, as originally reported by The Autopian. The executive remarked that the vehicle “shouldn’t even exist”, further noting that it was “too late to stop it”.
Unlike Honda, which canceled its EV plans at a loss, Mercedes-Benz was too deeply invested to pivot. Development of its AMG EVs exceeded $1 billion, while the EQS and EQE SUV models cost roughly 5 billion euros. These projects were driven by CEO Ola Källenius, who was reportedly chasing Tesla’s high stock valuation.
A Manager Magazine report reveals that Mercedes-Benz executives privately labeled the brand’s EQ electric lineup the biggest failure in company history after sales plummeted 90% in 2024.
