The German car manufacturer BMW announced today that the company’s pre-tax profit in the second quarter of this year fell by 35 percent.

This was primarily due to a sharp decline in sales in China and weakening consumer confidence due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Reuters reported.

BMW delivered 590,962 vehicles in the second quarter, which is a decrease of 4.9 percent compared to the same period last year. The biggest blow came from China, where sales sank by as much as 30 percent. In comparison, Mercedes-Benz sold 511,900 vehicles in the second quarter, six percent less than last year, while Audi recorded a drop of more than eight percent, with 367,139 cars delivered.

BMW is now announcing additional job cuts to boost competitiveness.

According to information from the company, BMW will launch a program to reduce the number of employees, which should eliminate around 8,000 jobs worldwide.

The reduction in the number of employees should be implemented through the natural outflow of workers and voluntary severance pay, Wirtschaftsvohe reports.

The program will last from October 2026 to the end of 2027 and will mainly apply to employees in administration, development, and other so-called indirect areas that are not directly related to vehicle production.
