India Says Tesla Should Not Sell Imported Made-in-China Cars In The Country – Here Is Why
India says U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla should not sell Made-in-China cars in the country.
It says Tesla must sell ‘Made-in-India’ cars cos India is a large market for all electric vehicles.
It added that Tesla selling imported Made-in-China vehicles in the country is not a good proposition.
Late last year, Tesla started exporting China-made electric vehicles to dealerships in European countries.
Data from CPCA shows that Tesla China exported 152,090 vehicles from January through end of November, 2021.

India’s Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, says U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc is welcomed to set up shop in India, make cars there for sale and export them, but must not import cars from China.
Speaking at Raisina Dialogue 2022 in New Delhi on Tuesday, April 26, Gadkari said Tesla must sell ‘Made-in-India’ cars cos India is a large market for all electric vehicles.
“If Elon Musk is ready to manufacture in India, we have all the competencies and technology. Our request to him is to manufacture in India. India is a huge market, we have ports here. He could make in India and export all over.”

He added that Tesla selling imported Made-in-China vehicles in the country is not a good proposition.

“But suppose he wants to manufacture in China and sell in India, it cannot be a good proposition,”
Tesla is desperate to import and sell its Made-in-China electric vehicles to several markets, including in India, having lobbied officials in New Delhi for nearly a year to cut tariffs.
Late last year, the company started exporting China-made electric vehicles to dealerships in European countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland.
Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shows that Tesla China has exported a total of 152,090 vehicles this year through the end of November.
