Indian Railways has used a Mahindra Bolero SUV transformed into a Rail Inspection Vehicle (RIV) to inspect the ongoing works at the Jammu & Kashmir’s Chenab bridge, a steel and concrete arch bridge between Bakkal and Kauri.
Video shared by journalist Rajendra B. Aklekar on his twitter handle shows the converted Indian-made Mahindra Bolero SUV riding on the track as it leads the inspection trolleys along what is claimed to be the world’s highest railway arch bridge.
Aklekar, with the Twitter handle, @rajtoday, wrote :
“So it was a Mahindra Bolero converted into a rail vehicle that was one of the first vehicles to run on the world’s tallest railway arch bridge at Chenab, J&K, leading the inspection trolleys of Ashwini Vaishnaw. The bridge at 359 m is taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.”
To allow the Mahindra Bolero run on the tracks, the popular Indian 7-seater Compact SUV was fitted with small wheels, allowing an inspection speeds up to 40 mph (56 km/h).
Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra group, who also shared the video posted by Aklekar, wrote :
“You gave me a great start to the day with your post, @rajtoday 🙏🏽 I will treasure these images. They sum up why the founders of @MahindraRise decided to build off-road vehicles in independent India. They were meant to go where no paths existed & clear the way for others to follow.”
