JLR has deployed drone-based ‘inspection pilot’ at its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) in Wolverhampton, an initiative it said has dramatically reduced machinery and site inspection time by up to 95 percent.

Operated via tablet, the brand said the Elios 3 drone by Flyability was able to cut 4‑hour process to just 10 minutes, thanks to its ability to reach high and confined spaces, allowing maintenance teams to inspect equipment safely from the factory floor.

“Trials like this one with advanced drone technology are helping us improve employee safety, reduce maintenance downtime and operate more efficiently,” said Nigel Blenkinsop, Executive Director of Industrial Operations.

Following successful trials at EPMC, JLR said that the drone will be deployed at its Logistics Operations Centre (LOC) in Solihull, where it will be equipped with barcode scanners to automate inventory checks, replacing manual processes and enabling faster, more accurate stock updates.

The initiative, which aligns with JLR’s vision for its factories of the future, is part of the British luxury marque’s £3.8bn annual investment into industrial transformation, new products and technology.

“I never imagined I’d be learning to fly drones as part of my role. It’s been exciting to learn how to use this technology and the skills I’ve developed will stay with me throughout my career,” Shantnu Mehta, Project Engineer at JLR added.
